Smooth Practice Gives You Helpful Clues
When you practise one problem type repeatedly, each problem tells you what method comes next.
Ten spreadsheet exercises on the same formula do not require ten separate decisions. After the first few, your brain follows the established pattern.
This is blocked practice: finishing one category before starting another. It improves speed during practice, which makes the session feel productive.
But part of that performance comes from the surrounding clues, not from learning that can stand on its own.
Mixed Practice Removes Those Clues
Interleaving mixes different topics or problem types within the same session. Now your brain must identify the problem, select a method, retrieve it, and apply it. I call this the
Choose–Retrieve–Apply Loop.
The difficulty is not an unfortunate side effect. It is the work.
Consider Samira, a realistic composite of professionals I have trained. She was learning three AI skills: writing prompts, checking outputs, and building simple automations.
She originally devoted a full evening to each skill. Her practice looked polished, but she froze when a real task required all three.

Discomfort Is Useful, but It Is Not Proof by Itself
Not every confusing session is effective. Poor instructions, missing foundations, and unnecessary complexity can also make learning difficult. The useful distinction is whether the struggle forces you to retrieve and choose.
If you understand the individual methods but feel less fluent when they are mixed, the discomfort may be productive. If you cannot explain the methods separately, mixing them will probably create noise rather than learning.

What the Research Found
In a 2008 study, UCLA psychologists Nate Kornell and Robert Bjork asked 120 undergraduates to learn the styles of different artists.
Some examples were grouped by artist; others were interleaved. During study, the grouped arrangement felt easier.
On the later identification test, however, students who saw interleaved examples answered about 65% correctly, compared with 35% after blocked study.
The finding matters because the test removed the sequence that had made practice feel easy. Learners had to examine each new painting and decide which style applied.
That is closer to professional work, where problems rarely arrive labelled with the method you should use.
Make Practice Look More Like Real Work
The uncomfortable moment between problems is where you stop repeating and start choosing.
That choice builds the retrieval route you will need when the course, guide, or familiar sequence is gone.
In your next skill-building session, rotate among three related problem types every 15 minutes.
Do not try to make the transitions smooth. Notice whether the final rotation feels harder to begin but easier to diagnose.
